DJing at Sundance Resort: What to Know Before Your Wedding
If you’re looking for one of the most beautiful places to host a wedding or event in Utah, Sundance should absolutely be on your list. I’ve had the chance to DJ there many times, and every time I leave thinking, “Why don’t more people know about this place?”
So, if you’re considering Sundance for your next event or your wedding, here’s what I’ve learned from actually being behind the decks.
The Vibe
Let’s get this out of the way first: Sundance is not a nightclub, and it’s not trying to be. The whole property leans into a quiet, artsy feel. This means the DJ experience is unique compared to, say, a downtown SLC venue or a big hotel ballroom.
People come to Sundance for the scenery, great food, and an unforgettable night on the dance floor. My approach at Sundance is to always read the room and build energy naturally, catering to the guests’ taste, style, and energy. Open format is the way to go here! If it fits the crowd, I will usually lean on warm, organic tracks early in the night, such as acoustic, soul, and singer-songwriter tunes before easing into the dance floor favorites once dinner wraps and people are ready to party the night away!
Sound Restrictions: Know Before You Go
Here’s a piece that sometimes catches people off guard: Sundance has resort quiet hours, and music volume needs to come down by 11:00pm. This isn’t a quirk specific to Sundance, however; most Utah mountain venues have similar noise ordinances. Sound travels differently up in the mountains, and resorts like Sundance take that seriously to respect the environment. But don’t worry! Even with the sound restrictions, we can still throw you a five-star event.
So what does the sound cut off mean for your wedding or event? As you’re planning your timeline, I would suggest building your must play moments like the first dance, parent dances, bouquet toss, cake cutting, etc… earlier in the night so you’re not racing the clock. As a Sundance DJ, I know how to build the timeline around these restrictions, so nothing feels rushed at the end of the night. (I always build the timeline backward from the venue cutoff so the dance floor peaks right when it needs to, and guests remember the night as the party of their lives. )
Setup Considerations
Sundance’s event spaces are gorgeous but because it is in mountains, power access, layout, and load in can look different than a traditional ballroom. As you plan your wedding, I recommend a site visit or at least a detailed conversation with your DJ/production team ahead of time so there are no surprises on setup day. Here are some things I would personally check for:
- Power availability: Is there enough power on site, or do we need to bring generators?
- Load in: How far is parking from the actual event space, and is there elevation change to account for (there almost always is at Sundance)?
- Indoor vs. outdoor: Ceremony and reception spaces may be in different spots on the property, which affects what equipment needs to move and when.
- Weather backup (Important!): Mountain weather changes fast. Always have a plan B, especially if any part of your event is outdoors.
Getting these answers early means setup day is smooth instead of stressful, and it lets me as your DJ show up 100% prepared to create a fantastic experience for you and your guests at Sundance Resort.
Why I LOVE DJing at Sundance Mountain Resort
Sundance Resort is one of my favorite places to DJ at all year, especially because of the contrast between a packed dance floor and the total mountain silence just beyond the party.
